Professor Peter Childs, Chair and Leader in Engineering Design, presents his Inaugural Lecture on; “Creativity, Innovation and Design.”

A tea/coffee reception will precede the lecture at 16.45 in the Senior Common Room, Sherfield Building

Abstract: Creativity can be defined as the ability to imagine or invent something new of value. Alternatively it can be viewed as imagination with responsibility. In the engineering domain, in common with many workplace and community experiences, creativity is both sought after and resisted. Innovation involves the realisation of value from creativity, with design often the linking activity between the two. This presentation will explore the tensions involved with creativity, the value and use of creative tools in engineering and the importance of design in realising commercial potential. Specific attention will be given to a series of applications from the author’s experience in product design, gas turbine technology, temperature measurement, rotating flow and the interdisciplinary facilitation of creativity.

Biography: Peter R.N. Childs is the Professorial Lead in Engineering Design at Imperial College London. His general interests include creativity and creative methods, mechanical design, rotating flow, sustainable energy component, concept and system design. He was formerly the director of InQbate, the HEFCE-funded Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Creativity, Director of the Rolls-Royce supported University Technology Centre for Aero-Thermal Systems, and a Professor at the University of Sussex. He is the joint course leader for the Innovation Design Engineering double masters degree run in collaboration between the Royal College of Art and Imperial College.
