Mr Martin Pendergast presents this Global Health Forum talk on: “The Role of the Catholic Church in HIV Prevention,” in conjunction with Imperial College’s positively red week.

Abstract: Come and get involved in this discussion lead by Mr Martin Penderast. There will be ample opportunity to share your views and learn from different points of view as we discuss one of the most contentious issues in the worlds continued fight against HIV. This event is not entitled to criticise or condemn peoples actions but to engage in meaningful discussion so we can move forward in tackling what is still such a debilitating condition.

Biography: Martin Pendergast studied theology in Rome and Bristol. A qualified social worker, he has worked in the HIV/AIDS field since 1984, initially managing HIV-specific social work services in Lambeth, and in 1989 moving into NHS commissioning of HIV, Sexual Health, and Alcohol & Substance Use prevention and treatment services in North East London. Since the early 1980’s he has been involved in a variety of local, pan-London, national and international faith-based responses to the HIV pandemic. He is a Trustee of NAM- AIDSMap ( www.aidsmap.com) He is Executive Secretary of Catholics for AIDS Prevention & Support (CAPS), a founder member of the Lesbian & Gay Christian Movement, Secretary of its Roman Catholic Caucus, and coordinator of liturgies for LGBT Catholics, their parents, families and friends at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption & St. Gregory, Warwick Street, Soho, London. He is also a Co-Chair of the Interfaith Alliance UK. He recently completed a five-year membership of the Government’s Independent Advisory Group on Teenage Pregnancy.
