Abstract
How do social structure and shared meanings co-evolve? Within organizational teams the process is difficult to track because it depends on subtle alignments of social capital and language. However, in a virtual team context, the process becomes more transparent and can be analyzed over time. Thus, the research question consisted of analyzing how social structure related to the development of shared understanding. This question was pursued in a global virtual project team consisting of 46 people working for over eight months. The data consisted of electronic messages exchanged during the period of the project. The analysis showed that the evolution of meaning-making in the virtual team context was significantly influenced by the stability and density of social structures.
