Professor Marco Lima, Director, Bioethanol Research Centre, Brazil presents this Centre for Environmental Policy/Porter Alliance Seminar.

Abstract: Professor Marco Lima will present the initial plans of the newly formed Bioethanol Science and Technology Centre (CTBE), located in Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil. This Centre is co-located with the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS), with funding from the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology and will be close to the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP).

The Centre’s strategic objective will be to contribute to ensure Brazilian leadership in the sustainable production of bioethanol from sugar cane through state-of-the-art research, development, and innovation. It will aim to collaborate closely with universities, research organisations, and private companies on a national and international scale. Among the facilities under development at the Centre is a Pilot Plant for Process Development, which will include bagasse pretreatment, enzymatic
hydrolysis, fermentation, and distillation laboratories, supported by the necessary analytical Instrumentation. Prof. Marco Lima will also discuss the current situation of the Brazilian ethanol fuel programme.

CTBE is looking for senior and junior dynamic researchers, to constitute its core research staff and to develop areas of investigation.

Professor Marco LimaBiography: Professor Marco Lima obtained his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in physics, at University of São Paulo, Brazil, and his Ph.D. in chemistry at the California Institute of Technology (CALTECH), USA. He joined the Physics Institute of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in 1986. He is an editor of a European physics journal and executive member of the International Conference on Photonic, Electronic, and Atomic Collisions. Recently Professor Lima was appointed Director of the Bioethanol Science and Technology Center (Centro de Ciência e tecnologia do Etanol – CTBE).
