Professor Peter Farmer present this lecture “Biomarkers and epidemiology: the ECNIS Network of Excellence”.

Abstract: ECNIS (Environmental Cancer Risk, Nutrition and Individual Susceptibility) is a Network of Excellence supported by the European Commission Sixth Framework programme.  Its goal is ‘to establish an internationally competitive network of European research centres to overcome the existing fragmentation of activities and to enhance the quality and relevance of research on environment, nutrition, and cancer risk as modulated by diet and genetic disposition’.  One of its main aims is to develop and validate biomarkers of exposure, effect and susceptibility for environmental and occupational cancer risk assessment.  Additionally it integrates joint training and mobility programs in the area of environmental cancer molecular epidemiology, provides core facilities, produces reports and monographs, is establishing a  knowledge data base on molecular epidemiology and cancer (MEC), and funds projects related to the development and validation of procedures in molecular epidemiology.
