The venture capital industry is often shrouded in mystery. The aim of the workshop is to break the spell and reveal what is a highly structured and straightforward industry that demands a long-term commitment from those who play in it. We aim to clarify the process used by venture capitalists to select the new ventures in which they invest and show how typical capital deals are structured.

Format of the day:

In the morning session of the workshop we will focus on the following key points:
Business plans come in two editions, one for the entrepreneurial team as a strategy document and another as a sales pitch to help you raise finance.
The business plan is often useful in enabling you to launch the business, but in some circumstances entrepreneurs are better off spending their time just doing business!
How to structure a business plan
How to approach potential investors with your business plan, and how they might read it!
The role and importance of finance for start-ups and the advantages and disadvantages of equity finance.

In the afternoon session of the workshop we will focus on the financing strategy for new ventures and take a closer look at the venture capital industry. We will focus in details on the following:
How equity is divided between founders of the the venture and how ‘milestones’ are used to sturcture financing strategies:
-The difference between value and profit
-The structure of the venture capital cycle
-The nature of venture capital deals

About the speaker:
Simon Stockley, Director, Tanaka Business School, Imperial College London

Simon teaches courses on entrepreneurship at the Tanaka Business School. His research interests includes the development of entrepreneurial behaviour, the nature of opportunity and resource based competitive advantage.
Simon’s career spans oil exploration, corporate lending and business support. In the latter role he has advised over 300 start-up businesses and 60 high growth ventures. He currently consults in both the public and private sectors and has an extensive executive educational portfolio
