I will show that using the classic mixing length theory and criteria for shear instability one can obtain a parameterization for turbulence mixing induced by internal waves that agrees surprisingly well with observations. Application of the parameterization to the ocean seems to suggest that energetic turbulent regions of the ocean interior are restratified at a rate that keeps mixing optimal. This happens when there is the right balance of density stratification and shear production.
