The Institute of Global Health Innovation is delighted to be hosting a special guest lecture from Noubar Afeyan, PhD, the founder and CEO of the bioplatform innovation company Flagship Pioneering, and co-founder and chairman of Moderna, the messenger RNA drug and vaccine company.
Dr Afeyan will share more about Moderna’s path to creating their mRNA vaccine for COVID-19, Flagship Pioneering’s unique approach to innovation, and his reflections on the future of biotech. Since its launch in 2000, Flagship Pioneering has applied its unique hypothesis-driven innovation process to originate and foster more than 100 scientific ventures.
Beyond the example of Moderna, Flagship’s team of 300 professionals currently operate an ecosystem of 41 internally-founded companies that employ over 5000 people, expend over $3b USD in R&D fueling a pipeline of over 100 products under development that aim to impact human health and sustainability, globally.
The event will be opened by Professor the Lord Ara Darzi, IGHI co-director.
There will be a live Q&A with the opportunity to ask Dr Afeyan your questions.
About Dr Afeyan
Dr. Noubar Afeyan is founder and CEO of Flagship Pioneering, a company that creates bioplatform companies to transform human health and sustainability. An entrepreneur and biochemical engineer, Dr. Afeyan holds more than 100 patents and has co-founded more than 70 life science and technology startups during his 33-year career. He is co-founder and chairman of the board of Moderna, the pioneering messenger RNA vaccine company addressing the global COVID-19 pandemic, and serves on the boards of several private and public companies. He is the co-founder of the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity and a number of other philanthropic projects focused on Armenia.

This event will be held both online via live stream and in-person on campus. The event is open to all College students and staff and Imperial IDs will be checked on entry. Registration for the in-person event is required due to limited capacity and places will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register via Eventbrite.
