Title

Extremal black holes and their (in-)stability through the lens of the massless Vlasov equation

Abstract

We study the dynamics of so-called extremal black holes of general relativity. These objects extremise certain geometric inequalities and near-extremal black holes are thought to be ubiquitous in the universe. By studying the massless Vlasov equation on the exterior of the subextremal and extremal Reissner-Nordström spacetimes, we obtain a different view on a well-known instability result of general relativity, the Aretakis instability.
