Wittgenstein’s private language argument has been a source of controversy ever since the publication of the Philosophical Investigations.
There have been various interpretations of why Wittgenstein thought that a purely private and totally subjective language would not be possible and why the issue matters at all. Most interpretations of this issue see the importance of his claim as being that it undermines the starting point of Cartesian conceptions of mind.
However, in this talk we will explore the relation between the private language argument and epistemology, and will see that his thought may pose a significant challenge to many common-sense assumptions about the nature of truth and knowledge.
