Title: Introduction to schemes

Speaker: Yifan Zhao

Abstract: The theory of schemes plays a crucial role in modern algebraic and arithmetic geometry. It enables us to work over arbitrary rings instead of just the complex field, which makes it particularly suitable for applications in number theory. In this talk I will give a gentle introduction to schemes, explain why they are natural generalizations of (affine/projective) varieties and discuss why we need schemes from the perspective of algebraic geometry.

Some snacks will be provided before and after the talk.
