Simulation Modeling with Global Burden of Disease Estimates: from you-are-here to what-if with the Vivarium simulation framework
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) coordinates the Global Burden of Disease collaboration which produces a comprehensive collection of data on the incidence, prevalence, and risks of disease for over 900 locations, including 195 countries. However, this massive effort often stops just short of providing the information most needed for making evidence-based public health policies.
In this talk, I will share recent developments and applications of the Vivarium simulation framework, which the IHME Simulation Science Team has developed to take GBD estimates and deduce how scaling-up implementation of alternative interventions will reduce disease burden. We can also use this approach to make estimates of what these alternatives will cost.
I will demonstrate a range of examples of GBD-based Vivarium simulations, including to malnutrition, tuberculosis, and cardiovascular disease.
