The role of atmospheric circulation in climate change

This talk will give an overview of how atmospheric circulation shapes weather and climate, particularly in the extratropics, and what role it might play in the development of anthropogenic climate change. Circulation is a key source of spread between model projections but the ensemble mean change in circulation is relatively small. We revisit observed circulation trends in modern reanalysis data over the 40-year satellite period and suggest a new hypothesis that the jet streams may be responding more sensitively to greenhouse gas forcing than climate models predict.
