Medical therapy for weight loss: from research to reality event card

The ongoing revolution in medical therapy for weight management has the potential to have major impacts not just on individual patients, but more widely on public approaches, public finances and potentially a broad range of diseases and behaviours. Innovation continues apace with new drug emerging, but there are uncertainties about long term safety, efficacy and affordability.

Imperial has a distinguished record in this area, so please join us for our mini-symposium, as we explore the fundamental science behind these ground-breaking drugs, the excitement of the latest clinical trials, and hear directly from involved in thinking about the place for these drugs. The symposium will feature speakers from across the Faculty of Medicine, as well as the NIHR Clinical Research Network National Lead for Metabolic and Endocrine Disorders, and the former Chair of the NICE Technology Appraisal Committee that approved Semaglutide for NHS funding. The symposium will conclude with an interactive panel/ audience discussion and Q&A.

The event is intended for an internal non-specialist audience. Whilst aimed chiefly at the Faculty of Medicine (both medics and non-medics), attendees from other faculties are very welcome, so please do feel free to invite your colleagues and students from other parts of the College.

Speakers and Discussion Panel include:

  • Professor Tricia Tan, Chair in Metabolic Medicine and Endocrinology, Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction, Imperial (Chair)
  • Professor John Wilding, Professor of Medicine and Head of the Department of Obesity and Endocrinology, University of Liverpool and NIHR Clinical Research Network National Lead for Metabolic and Endocrine Disorders
  • Dr Jane Adam, former Chair of Technology Appraisal Committee A, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Consultant Radiologist, St George’s Hospital, London
  • Dr Alejandra Tomas, Senior Lecturer, Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction, Imperial
