Engineering biology takes the principles of synthetic biology to provide solutions to critical challenges. It’s a dynamic field, that enables the construction and redesign of biological systems from DNA and RNA to proteins, cells and tissues. The potential applications are very broad and this symposium will touch on some of them, particularly in medicine where the opportunity for substantial impacts on health is increasingly recognised (not least amongst funders).
Please join us on 24 April from 13.30 for our latest in what has been a very well-attended series of faculty mini-symposia. Engineering Biology: Designing the future for healthcare solutions will explore this exciting frontier in medicine, and how Imperial and its partners are already having an impact. The symposium will feature speakers from the Faculties of Medicine, Natural Sciences and Engineering, as well as founders and executives from a range of entrepreneurial young companies pushing the field boundaries to develop healthcare solutions. Our plenary speaker, Dr Mark Kotter, is both a distinguished academic neurosurgeon at the University of Cambridge and the scientific founder of two companies exploiting new technology to provide tools for drug discovery and cell therapy and to revolutionise food science through cultured meat products. The symposium will conclude with an interactive panel/ audience discussion and Q&A.
The event is intended for an internal non-specialist audience. Whilst aimed chiefly at the Faculty of Medicine (both medics and non-medics), attendees from other faculties are very welcome, so please do invite your colleagues and students.
