The ECRI Funding Workshop taking place on Friday 11 April is piloting a new way to support researchers and develop skills around the funding process. Open to PGRs, research staff and early career academics looking to present their research or develop skills in providing feedback on applications the one-day session aims to benefit all involved.

Three applicants will have the opportunity to present their work and obtain detailed feedback on a draft application from a large number of reviewers at different career stages. Applicants will be working on a funding application (postdoctoral funding, fellowship, grant, award) appropriate to your career stage. You will be working on a draft which will be ready for feedback towards the end of March.

Applicants to present must complete the expression of interest form by Thursday 6 March.

We are also seeking participant reviewers with a diverse range of experience, fields and backgrounds to provide presenter applicants with feedback on their funding applications. Gain insight on what makes a good application and practice your feedback skills.

Applicants to review must complete the ‘Apply to be a reviewer’ form by Thursday 20 March.

Further Details on what presenting and reviewing entails

To Present

Are you a PGR, member of research staff, or lecturer looking to apply for funding in the next six months? Do you have a draft of your application on which you would like feedback? ECRI is piloting a new way to support researchers wanting feedback on a funding application.

We are seeking:

  • One PGR
  • One member of research staff(postdoc or fellow)
  • One early career academic(lecturer or above)

Three applicants will have the opportunity to present their work and obtain detailed feedback on a draft application from a large number of reviewers at different career stages. We want drafts which are as near to completion as possible. We recognise there may be some elements which you will not have ready (e.g. letters of support, full costings), however more late-stage drafts will be prioritised. All participants will be asked to agree to keep your proposals and the discussions on the day confidential. We will ask you for a lay summary now, with full drafts due for those accepted by Tuesday 25 March.

Applicants will be working on a funding application (postdoctoral funding, fellowship, grant, award) appropriate to your career stage. You will be working on a draft which will be ready for feedback towards the end of March. If you are not selected, we will signpost you to other support and offer you priority access to be a reviewer. More information on participating as a reviewer will be available soon.

Applicants to present must complete the expression of interest form by Thursday 6 March.

Expected outcomes for applicants:

  • Unlock your funding potential: Increase your confidence in writing and communicating your funding applications.
  • Refine Your Proposals: Receive detailed feedback on your drafts from a range of researchers at different stages and from across different disciplines; check how well you have communicated your vision and approach; practice pitching your research to different audiences; reflect upon and refine your proposals before submission

Timeline:

  • Deadline for EoIs: 5.00pm on Thursday 6 March
  • Applicants will be informed in the week beginning 10 March
  • Deadline for full draft applications: Tuesday 25 March
  • One day workshop, South Kensington: Friday 11 April

For more information about this Research England funded initiative, see the ECRI projects page (under Pilots), or contact Dr Anna Seabourne a.seabourne@imperial.ac.uk.

Details on applying to be a reviewer will be added in early March.

To Review

Are you a PGR, member of research staff, or lecturer interested in developing your awareness of what makes a good funding application? Would you like to gain insights into the funding application process?

ECRI is piloting a new way to support researchers develop their skills and knowledge around funding. We are seeking participant reviewers with a diverse range of experience, fields and backgrounds to provide presenter applicants with feedback on their funding applications.

As reviewer participants, you will see three short presentations on the applications (similar to those which might be required at interviews) and will provide detailed feedback on a draft application.

Expected outcomes for reviewer participants:

  • Gain insights into what makes a good application: see proposals from different stages and from across different disciplines; read how researchers communicate vision and approach; see the applicants pitch their research ; see how reflection upon and refining proposals is essential prior to submission

  • Recognise and understand how to provide clear feedback: develop your reviewing skills, including trialing using different lenses
