Short Bio: Prof Thumbi Ndung’u
Thumbi Ndung’u is currently Provost’s Visiting Professor of HIV Virology and Immunology at Imperial College London, UK. He is Director for Basic and Translational Science at Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in Durban, South Africa and Professor of Infectious Diseases at University College London, UK.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and completed a PhD and postdoctoral research in virology and immunology at Harvard University, USA. He is the recipient of several awards for scientific excellence and leadership, including the South African Medical Research Council Gold Scientific Achievement Award and the KT Jeang Retrovirology Prize. He is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa, a fellow of the African Academy of Sciences and a member of the United States National Academy of Medicine.
His research focuses on host/virus interplay in HIV infection and how this may be harnessed for immune-based prevention or control of HIV.
