This event aims to raise awareness, problematise and look for solutions to the challenge of small numbers in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion analysis. Gathering data and evaluating progress are key aspects of EDI work. However, when working with some groups of people, we run into the problem of small numbers—which can present methodological, legal, ethical and practical concerns. The biggest danger is that small numbers of individuals means that a group, a characteristic or intersectional factors get ignored as it was not clear how to account for them in the data.
Drawing on provocations from experts from a variety and fields and professional areas, this is a discussion-based event to:
- Raise awareness of the challenge of small numbers in EDI work, especially when grouped into Faculties and Departments
- Gain insight into the methodological, statistical, legal and ethical considerations, building on existing expertise in Mathematics (statistics)
- Problematise and offer opportunities to share challenges
- Proposed solutions for methodological, legal, ethical and practical challenges
- Build the community of practice of those furthering EDI aims in a variety of academic, professional and EDI-oriented roles
Outcomes will feed into the development of student learning analytics, institutional reporting, and EDI. Please share invite with colleagues and students.
