Department seminar banner for Imperial Bioengineering featuring Dr Kerry Ann Mitchell from The Ohio State University USA who will speak on neuroplastic surgery optimizing patient outcomes through collaboration innovation and education on 25 June at 4PM in RSM 2.28 with a smiling headshot of Dr Mitchell on the right

PLEASE NOTE:

  • This seminar is IN PERSON ONLY in room RSM 2.28, Level 2, Royal School of Mines at Imperial College London’s South Kensington campus.
  • Refreshments and the opportunity to network will take place after this seminar in RSM 3.24.

GUEST SPEAKER:
Dr Kerry-Ann Mitchell, Director, Neuroplastic Surgery Programme and Assistant Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Ohio State University College of Medicine & Wexner Medical Centre

ABSTRACT:
Brain and skull surgeries can be life-saving but often leave patients with visible changes such as indentations, missing bone, facial asymmetry, and scarring. These physical changes can deeply affect neurological function, as well as quality of life and self-image.

Neuroplastic surgery is an emerging subspecialty that integrates the expertise of neurosurgery and plastic surgery to address both functional and cosmetic outcomes in cranial procedures. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, this field focuses on restoring or preserving the patient’s preoperative appearance without compromising neurological goals. Central to this innovation is the use of customised, patient-specific implants made from advanced biocompatible materials, tailored to match the individual’s anatomy and surgical needs.

This seminar will explore the development and implementation of a neuroplastic surgery program, highlighting its transformative impact on patient care. Key topics will include surgical planning, implant design, collaborative team dynamics, and data on patient outcomes. The presentation will demonstrate how neuroplastic surgery is redefining standards in cranial reconstruction, improving both functional recovery and patient satisfaction.

BIOGRAPHY:
Kerry-Ann Mitchell, MD-PhD, FACS, is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at The Ohio State University.

Clinically, she serves as Director of the Neuroplastic Surgery Program, specialising in complex scalp and skull deformities. As Principal Investigator of the Neuroplastic Surgery Basic and Translational Research Laboratory, her research focuses on nanotransfection techniques to enhance calvarial bone healing following traumatic brain injury and strokes.

Her work is supported by funding from the National Institute of Health, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, and the Plastic Surgery Foundation.
