This event is part of the Friday Forums, a series of events consisting of a panel followed by an audience discussion. It is a rule of the Forum that half of the time is given over to audience discussion. Do come along expecting to be involved in lively discussion and debate. All Friday Forums are free with lunch provided and are open to all Imperial members.

This Friday Forum will explore socially responsible science. With its new branding Imperial puts social responsibility at its core. But how should we understand the term ‘Science for Humanity’? What directions does the term imply, and what is the role of pure research in this framing of academic life? When science funding is under threat in the USA, how should scientists best champion their value to society? And what research culture should we seek, if are to take the bigger view, and truly describe ourselves as ‘for all of humanity’?

With:

  • Emeritus Professor Dot Griffiths OBE, formerly Dean of Imperial Business School and Provost’s Envoy for Gender Equality 2013-2017
  • Emeritus Professor Stephen Curry, former Assistant Provost for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Chair of the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) 2017-2023
  • Vivienne Kuh, Lecturer in Responsible Innovation (Bristol University)
  • Professor Marisa Miraldo, Professor in Health Economics at Imperial Business School, and co-director of the School for Convergence Science in Health and Technology.

Friday Forums are open to all, include lunch and run from 12:30-14:00.
