Efficacy and effectiveness of Wolbachia-mediated sterility to supress dengue
Wolbachia incompatible insect technique coupled with sterile insect technique (IIT-SIT) involves the release of male Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to suppress wild-type Ae. aegypti. Here, I will outline the effectiveness and efficacy of Wolbachia IIT-SIT in reducing mosquito abundance, dengue risk and severe dengue via large-scale field trials and a cluster-randomized controlled trial comprising more than 1 million residents. This work presents the first evidence of using male Wolbachia releases to greatly reduce the risk of dengue in hyper-endemic settings in a post-operational phase.
