Green Innovation Challenge - Programme and themes webinar - Tuesday 25th November | 15:00 - 16:30 | Online

If you’re a student or early career researcher (from undergraduate through to postdoc) at Imperial who’s interested in using your expertise and collaborating to create new climate innovations then the Green Innovation Challenge is for you!

The Green Innovation Challenge

This five-week programme, in partnership with Undaunted’s Climate Solution Catalyst and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, will enable you to apply your creativity to real-world sustainability challenges from environmental science research, and pitch your idea to climate experts and entrepreneurs. Participants are invited to design solutions across six themes:

  • Biochar: How can biochar be most effectively deployed as a carbon sink, soil improver, nutrient management tool and crop yield booster in agriculture?
  • Nitrogen circularity: How can we move towards nitrogen circularity to protect waterways and support sustainable agriculture?
  • Rock weathering: How can rock weathering products be used for enhanced carbon capture in soils and water, balancing co-benefits and tradeoffs?
  • Ammonia: What sensing technologies will be needed in the ‘ammonia as an energy carrier’ market?
  • Urban flooding: What innovative solutions could be deployed for urban flood impact forecasting?
  • MRV: How can high-resolution earth observation data be used to develop new, practical and affordable solutions to environmental challenges?

You can apply as an individual or in a team. Team entries with fewer than four members may have additional team members assigned to them. All members of your team must be students or staff of Imperial College London (external applications will not be accepted). Your team will then be joined by members of the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology on your chosen theme.

What’s in it for you?

The programme provides practical innovation and entrepreneurial experience. It’s an opportunity to develop ideas from existing research, with access to a entrepreneurial programme, supported by expert guidance.

  • Develop an idea from first concept
  • Learn about customer discovery and identifying a value proposition
  • Understand what the next steps are in your development journey
  • Demonstrate teamwork, in partnership with team members across Imperial and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology

How to apply

Applications are now open!

Plus: join our webinar on 25 November 15.00-16.30: Find out what to expect on the programme and how to apply, and meet fellow students and ECRs across Imperial curious to explore how innovation can help research to have impact. We’ll share details about the kick off ideathon, masterclasses and pitch event, and dive into the six challenge themes: Biochar, Nitrogen Circularity, Rock Weathering, Ammonia, and Remote sensing.
