Title: From X-rays to AI: Towards Digital Chemistry for Materials Characterisation
Abstract: Modern functional materials, from battery electrodes to catalysts, operate under dynamic, multi-scale conditions that demand equally sophisticated tools to study them. My research combines advanced X-ray and neutron imaging with artificial intelligence to transform how we interpret complex experimental data. By developing physics-informed and generative AI models, I aim to fuse information from diffraction, tomography, and microscopy data into coherent digital representations of materials in action. These approaches will be implemented in nDTomo, an open-source software I developed which is now adopted by industry, and supported by the Battery Imaging Library (https://www.batteryimaginglibrary.com/), the first multi-modal multi-length scale database of battery imaging datasets. This work contributes to the broader field of Digital Chemistry, which integrates experiments, computation, and AI to accelerate discovery and optimise the design of functional materials for sustainable technologies.
