Biography: Prof John Briggs
Abstract of the talk:
Improvements in cryo-electron microscopy, tomography and image processing are making it easier to study small, challenging proteins, as well to determine the structures of proteins directly within complex environments like cells and irregular viruses. We apply these techniques to study how proteins interact with one another and with lipids to assemble enveloped viruses and coated vesicles, and to understand how the proteins remodel at different stages of the virus or vesicle lifecycle. I will illustrate our recent “in virus” structural biology projects, with a particular focus on how the matrix proteins of HIV-1 and Influenza A play their central roles in virus particle assembly.
