Student working in the lab

As part of Sustainability Month at Imperial College London, Dr Umang Shah will lead practical, solutions-focused tours on embedding sustainability into everyday workplace practices, without disrupting core operations.

These interactive one-hour tours – hosted in the Department of Chemical Engineering’s Undergraduate (UG) Teaching Lab – are designed for all staff and researchers working in laboratories, service facilities, and office spaces.

The Chemical Engineering UG lab is one of the first high-user turnover teaching facilities at Imperial to achieve LEAF Gold and My Green Lab Green certifications. Drawing on this award-winning facility as a live case study, Dr Shah will demonstrate how structured frameworks, operational discipline, and incremental improvements can collectively deliver substantial environmental gains.

What will I gain from attending?
Participants will gain actionable strategies to reduce material consumption, optimise equipment energy use, streamline procurement practices, and integrate sustainable decision-making into routine workflows, without compromising safety, compliance, or research integrity.

You will leave with practical tools, replicable models, and a clear roadmap for implementing low-effort, high-impact sustainability measures in their own workspaces.

This session is ideal for those seeking scalable, evidence-based approaches to advancing environmental performance across diverse operational settings.

Open to
Academics, researchers, professional and technical services staff, and postgraduate students across Imperial College London.

About Dr Umang Shah
Dr Umang Shah’s journey reflects a sustained commitment to embedding environmental stewardship into laboratory research culture. He has been a driving force behind advancing sustainability through the ECO Labs and CREATE Labs initiatives, ensuring that operational efficiency and environmental responsibility are fully aligned.

Under his leadership, the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Teaching Labs have achieved LEAF Gold certification for the past two consecutive years, alongside My Green Lab Green certification over the same period, demonstrating consistent, externally validated performance.

His initiatives extend beyond certification. He has championed resource optimisation, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and behavioural change within research teams, embedding sustainability into day-to-day lab practice rather than treating it as a compliance exercise. Through structured frameworks, measurable targets, and cross-lab collaboration, Dr Shah has established a scalable model for sustainable laboratory operations that continues to influence practice across the wider research community.
