Title: Combining numerical modelling and observations in determining aerosol-cloud interactions
Abstract: This presentation examines how aerosol–cloud interactions can be distinguished from natural cloud variability, combining observational, modelling, and satellite approaches developed at the Atmospheric Research Centre of Eastern Finland. A key focus is on large-eddy simulations to study aerosol effects and their influence on precipitation, emphasizing the challenges in quantifying how changes in aerosol load affects the amount of precipitation. The presentation also addresses biases in satellite-derived aerosol–cloud interaction metrics, showing how retrieval errors and cloud variability can distort observed relationships. This underlines the need for integrated modelling and measurement strategies to improve reliability in climate and weather applications.
