Scaling LCA Without Losing the Plot: A Founder’s View on AI, Data, and Trust
The Imperial Network of Excellence in Sustainability through Life Cycle Approaches will host Rob Pell, who will deliver a talk on how we can apply AI in LCA.
Abstract:
Two things are happening at once. Regulation is pushing carbon and impact data into every supply chain, CBAM, Battery Regulation Article 7, Digital Product Passports. And AI has made it trivial to generate a plausible-looking carbon footprint with no real data behind it.
This talk is about what happens when enterprise LCA programmes scale past the point where one person can check every number. The fix isn’t more scrutiny per number, it’s building the right decisions into the process itself: system boundaries, allocation, uncertainty. Get those wrong and results can shift by 2x before any real data is even involved.
I’ll talk through what to hand to AI and what to keep for practitioners, based on building XYCLE and MVDB at Minviro.
Bio:
Rob Pell is Founder and CEO of Minviro, an LCA and carbon footprint software company. He has a PhD in responsible sourcing of rare earth elements from the University of Exeter and started Minviro out of that research. Minviro built MVDB, a peer-reviewed life cycle inventory database, and XYCLE, a platform used by manufacturers including Apple, Tesla, BMW, BHP, and Rio Tinto. He sits on ISO/TC 333, the committee writing international standards for critical minerals.
