A one-day exhibition celebrating Afro-Caribbean creativity, identity and diaspora, with art, food, music and an artist meet-and-greet.

Home in Motion is a Black History Month exhibition at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences, celebrating Afro-Caribbean creativity, identity and diaspora.

Across our 7th floor, we’re bringing together work by external and internal artists, exploring home, memory and belonging through visual art, photography, textiles, craft, film and spoken word. From 4pm, join us for an artist meet-and-greet and our celebration, with cultural food, music, games and more.

Curator’s Note: Home in Motion
A Black History Month exhibition curated by Joshua A. Owolabi

“This exhibition invites us to pause and witness the intimate landscapes of Afro-Caribbean life: the objects, moments and colours that anchor us to home.

Home in Motion is a celebration of the everyday as profound. We’re interested in the small things that carry meaning, like a textile passed down, a spice jar on a shelf, or light falling through a familiar window. We’re drawn to the faces and gatherings that define culture, like the energy of Notting Hill Carnival, the dignity of a portrait, and the rhythm of daily life observed and honoured.

This is work about memory and belonging, and about what we carry with us. It is about seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary, and recognising that Afro-Caribbean creativity speaks in many languages: visual, sonic, tactile and performed.

We’ve invited artists working in visual art, photography, textiles, craft, film and live performance to share their objects, their moments and their stories of home in motion. This is a space for storytelling without apology, and celebration without compromise.

There’s an echo here of our science. The LMS Gene Home, an exhibit created with the Windrush community for the Great Exhibition Road Festival, explored how our genes and our environment work together to shape our health and identity, set inside the recreated living room of a Caribbean family in London. Home in Motion picks up that same thread, that home is one of the environments that shapes us most, and follows it through art.”

Featured artist: Michael McMillan
We’re honoured to welcome acclaimed artist and writer Michael McMillan as a featured artist. Michael’s celebrated work, including The Front Room, a permanent installation at the Museum of the Home, explores Caribbean diaspora life and the meaning of home, and was part of the inspiration behind our own Gene Home. His contribution sits at the heart of Home in Motion.

We’re grateful to the artists sharing their vision with us. Their work reminds us that home is not just a place. It’s a feeling, a practice, a beautiful insistence on being seen.

Your ticket gives you access to the building and the 7th floor from 16.00. Please bring your ticket with you.
