This paper examines some of the roles that identifying climatic events and periods (such as interglacials and the controversial Medieval Warm Period) have played in the climate sciences and public debate on climate change, reporting preliminary research in one strand of a collaborative Research Project ‘Making climate history’, which aims to offer a synthetic history of the climate sciences over the past 200 years.
