Imperial College NHS Trust has worked with the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust to bring Toyota’s ‘big rooms’, a cross-functional technique for improved product delivery into healthcare. Through this innovation, Imperial College improvement coaches are uniting a wide range of staff, patients and academics to improve patient flow and reduce unwarranted variations in care. As drivers of this initiative, the speakers will provide an overview of the programme, and leave the audience with facilitation techniques to help teams to deliver ‘big rooms’ effectively. With input of participating improvement coaches, researchers and other, this session will also explore ways to robustly evaluate change.

Speakers:

  • Anne Kinderlerer, Associate Medical Director, Transformation Chief Clinical Information Officer, St. Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust

  • Viren Jeram, Transformation Lead and Programme Manager, Flow Coaching Academy, Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust

Learning objectives:

  1. Learn about the ‘Big Rooms’ methodology applied in healthcare and the role of research partners.
  2. Take away ways to adopt the initiative, and tools for your own teams.
  3. Get insight on drivers, challenges and outcomes of the ‘big room’ technique.
  4. Contribute to a wider discussion about ways to improve impact.
