Áinne Burke is an Irish artist, producer/director and writer and is the current artist in residence in the Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment, at Imperial College London.

The exhibition ‘Earth’s LAW™ in FLUX’ is an exploration of the 98 NCE’s (Natural Chemical Elements of Planet Earth) through a series of paintings and installations from the core of the earth to its skin where most of the elements are found. The way we affect the natural flux of these elements in the biomes of Earth’s Land, Air and Water (LAW™) is causing disease for all life.

“When we pollute Earth’s air, land and water we pollute ourselves”. How can we understand this in a personal way and as communities globally?

The project Áinne is developing with Imperial, TEAM (The Earth And Me), brings a visual message to an international audience. Using the chemistry of the periodic table (humans being 62 of these, all constantly interacting with the molecules of the air, earth and water), Ainne hopes to convey that as individuals, we all have a relationship to the earth, and she hopes to raise awareness of how we can better look after it.

Background:

In 2013-2016 Áinne worked with a local community in the Shan State of Myanmar on an ecology project on Inle Lake. Together they identified what is affecting the health of the lake and the natural environment around its shores through art and science workshops. The project is connected to thirteen other waterways in China, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Norway, Monaco, Ireland, Canada, USA, Brazil, UK and Ghana in a fictional story Áinne wrote about Inle Lake called ‘Win & Inle’ and its community. Her recent two-year MA in Art & Science in Central Saint Martins, UAL, and her present residency with the Grantham Institute Climate Change and the Environment collaborating with Imperial scientists will inform the illustrations for the ‘Win & Inle ‘ book and a series of paintings and installations for the UN International Environment Day on 5 June 2019.
