Green GB Week is a week of events and activity bringing together businesses, schools, colleges, universities, community groups, and charities to explore how clean growth will change our futures and others can contribute to action on climate change.

Spearheaded by the Rt Hon Claire Perry MP, Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth, the government initiative is led the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), aims to highlight the successes and opportunities of clean, low-carbon business and enterprise in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Imperial College London is hosting a number of activities for different audiences during the week:

Monday 15 October

Launch Event: European Launch of IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C (invitation only)

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s Special Report on 1.5°C, produced at the invitation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, was launched on 8 October. Imperial College London hosts the European Launch of the report, including short speeches from the IPCC Chair and leading authors on the key findings of the report, as well as a session on its implications for business and the international community.

Discussion: How to avoid the worst effects of climate change

Meet two of the authors of the IPCC’s Special Report on 1.5°C at this joint event with the Royal Meteorolgical Society. University of Oxford’s Professor Myles Allen and Imperial’s Dr Joeri Rogelj will deliver short presentations about their involvement and the content of the report followed by a Q&A session where the audience will be invited to ask questions.

Science in the City: Business and the Environment

The Grantham Institute and John Lewis & Partners are hosting a Breakfast Seminar on Business and the Environment.

Business expertise complemented by academic input can play a role in identifying sustainable and climate-friendly investments. The Grantham Institute launched its ‘Science in the City’ scheme in 2017 to create space for City of London businesses to discuss their portfolios with top technical experts from Imperial College London. Now in its second year, the scheme has visited nine companies – including Barclays Bank UK Plc, Santander UK Plc and BlackRock Inc. – hosting 11 session on topics ranging from water management, disruptive battery technologies and energy storage to the future of nuclear power.

Exhibit at Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)

As part of Green GB week, the Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment at Imperial College London will be hosting an information stand for staff and visitors at the Westminster offices of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Grantham Institute staff will be on hand to discuss their work on technologies for a low carbon future (particularly energy storage and options for heavy industry), the co-benefits of climate change mitigation and concepts around a ‘Just Transition’ towards a lower-carbon future.”

Thursday 18 October

Imperial Lates: Greenovate

18 October, 18:00-21:00, Imperial College Main Entrance, Exhibition Road, South Kensington Campus

Living office furniture, zero-carbon beer and roving self-powered turbines to collect plastic from the oceans.

Imperial College London, the Grantham Institute and Climate-KIC are hosting a showcase of how innovation and new ideas could help address the major environmental issues we face on both global and local scales. Come along to print your own green wall paper designs, shape future innovations in our ideas workshop, have a frank discussion on how we tackle London’s air pollution, and input into our vision for a more sustainable world.
