This seminar is given by Jane Burston, Head of Energy & Environment, National Physical Laboratory, who leads the Climate, Environment and Energy work at the National Physical Laboratory. Her team of 150 scientists and engineers deliver £18 million per annum research and commercial work on emissions measurement, air pollution, climate monitoring and energy technologies.

Abstract:
The world is changing rapidly. Energy systems will need to undergo complete transformation to keep pace with growing populations, increased urbanisation and the challenges of climate change, energy security, affordability and universal access. Is this unprecedented global energy transformation possible? What are the opportunities? What are the barriers and how can we overcome them?
Biography
Jane was selected as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader in 2012 and now sits on the World Economic Forum Future Council on Energy alongside energy ministers, leading academics and CEOs of multinational businesses. She has received a number of recognitions for her work, including being named one of the ’40 under 40 European Young Leaders’by Friends of Europe and one of the ‘Top Twenty Outstanding Young People of the Year’ globally by the International Chamber of Commerce.
Previously, Jane was a board member of the climate policy think tank Sandbag, and Founder and CEO of Carbon Retirement, a social enterprise reforming emissions trading and carbon offsetting. In 2011, she was named in Management Today’s ’35 high-flying women under 35′ list and as Square Mile magazine’s ‘Social Entrepreneur of the Year’. Prior to establishing Carbon Retirement, Jane worked as a consultant in the environmental sector for several years, including on climate change policy for the Mayor of London and as an external consultant to a range of FTSE 100 businesses, public sector organisations and SMEs. She has a first class degree in Philosophy from the University of Cambridge.
