Artificial Intelligence-Enhanced ECGs: Detecting Hidden Heart Disease Risk
Professor Fu Siong Ng and his team specialise in developing artificial intelligence-enhanced electrocardiography (AI-ECG) that can predict disease before symptoms arise. The ECG is a routine test of the heart’s electrical activity, traditionally used to assess rate and rhythm. By applying advanced AI, the group can extract far richer diagnostic information from the same ECG signals. They are currently deploying the models in partner hospitals and awaiting regulatory approvals in the UK, EU, and US.
We interviewed Professor Fu Siong Ng and Dr Arunashis Sau about their work and the impact of Imperial’s BHF Centre of Research Excellence on their research.
Mapping the Diversity of Human Blood Vessel Cells
Blood vessels are essential for organ function, supplying oxygen and nutrients, removing waste, regulating blood pressure, and shaping tissue physiology. Until recently, the cellular diversity of human blood vessels across tissues remained poorly characterised. To address this gap, Professor Michela Noseda and her group set out to build a comprehensive Vascular Cell Atlas spanning the human body.
Using advanced cell and molecular biology techniques called single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics, the team identified distinct vascular cell types, characterised their communication networks, and predicting potential drug-cell interactions. This landmark study was led jointly by the Noseda Lab at Imperial College London and the Teichmann Lab at the University of Cambridge and was published in Nature Medicine in 2024.
We spoke with Professor Michela Noseda and Dr. Sam Barnett about this work and their next steps to advance the Vascular Cell Atlas.
