From a pioneering course in 1977 to a global network of over 4,500 environmental leaders.

A pioneering vision

The MSc Environmental Technology was launched in 1977, under the newly formed Imperial College Centre for Environmental Technology (ICCET).

At a time when “the environment” was only beginning to enter mainstream policy and research, the course broke new ground, combining science and technology with legal, medical, economic and sociological perspectives. This interdisciplinary approach remains at the heart of the programme today.

Timeline

1970s

Interest was immediate and enthusiastic. More than 120 applicants vied for just 24 places in the first cohort. Students came from a range of disciplines, united by a shared passion to tackle pressing environmental issues.

1980s - 2000s

Initially, students could specialise in just four areas, reflecting the emerging nature of the field. Over time, these specialisations expanded to cover an ever-wider range of topics, from climate change and sustainable business to environmental economics and policy, mirroring the growing complexity of global environmental challenges.

Today

Today, the MSc continues to evolve, shaped by the expertise of our academic staff and the needs of society. The course is designed to equip students to become the transdisciplinary professionals of tomorrow, capable of leading change across research, industry and policy.

2027

In 2027, the MSc in Environmental Technology will celebrate its 50th anniversary, marking half a century of innovation, leadership, and impact.

With more than 4,500 alumni working across sectors and continents, our community continues to shape how society understands and responds to environmental challenges.
