A team from the Centre for Health Policy conducted a 4 day visit to Togliatti in Eastern Russia to provide an overview of the healthcare facilities at the main production plant of JSC Togliattiazot, a corporation involved in production of ammonia and other industrial chemicals. The visit was undertaken in mid May by a team consisting of Michael Macdonnell a Senior Policy Fellow at IGHI’s Centre for Health Policy, Dominic King a clinical lecturer in surgery and Shazid Karim, a GP Darzi Fellow also at the Centre.
The delegation was met by Togliattiazot’s Professor Gazdieva who provided the team with an understanding of the corporation’s philosophy of providing high quality health and recreation facilities for over 5,000 employees based at the chemical plants. An in depth tour of the health resort termed the Nadezhda Sanatorium and the acute medical facility on the plant premises provided the team with an understanding of the treatment of common medical conditions for the employees. Further discussions with the medical team at Togliattiazot demonstrated their vision to provide holistic care with an emphasis on prevention whilst ensuring the highest medical standards were adhered to using the latest technologies available. The team will now be working on providing recommendations to help the corporation achieve its overall aim.
The team from the Centre for Health Policy were humbled by their host’s hospitality and alongside Professor Darzi, were happy to receive Professor Gazdieva and the President of JSC Togliattiazot Vladimir Makhlay for a lunch in London. Much was discussed including possible future collaborations between the corporation and IGHI.
