Imperial named number one sporting university in London
The 2010–11 British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) Season has finally come to a close, with Imperial finishing in 17th place, and as the top London institution.
The British Universities and Colleges Sports Season of 2010–11 has finally come to a close. Imperial teams worked above and beyond as teams and individuals this year to maintain the 17th position in the National league table, only a minor 10 points behind 16th place. The tally of 1455.5 points was an increase on last year’s total and enabled us to secure the title as number one institution for London, seven places in front of our nearest rival, Brunel. This is a great achievement for the College as a predominantly academic focused institution.
This year’s BUCS season culminated in the BUCS Championships that took place In Sheffield in March, to approximately 80 of our students competed across a number of sports. After five days of hard fought competition, Imperial walked away with a grand total of 716 points. These were earned by both individuals and teams. Not only did we compete to an excellent standard, but the students managed to secure a number of medals. Our Judo Club came home with a range of bronze, silver and gold medals. The Men’s and Women’s Fencing Teams dominated the fencing competition and took the two gold team medals. We can now confidently say we are the number one institution for fencing in the UK, an amazing achievement on its own.
Alice Mitchell, the women’s fencing captain led her team to one gold success and the following day competed in the judo competitions, earning herself another two bronze medals! We are yet to hear of another student who has competed in two different sports and achieved two medals at the BUCS championships.
Our Snooker Team returned to defend their trophy title and did just that at a venue in Leeds.
Alongside these medal winners, other teams including Volleyball, Water Polo and Ultimate Frisbee all did themselves and the College proud.
These achievements wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication, commitment and drive from the students and student sports clubs, so we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your hard work. Sport Imperial are proud to be able to support clubs and student athletes in the form of facilities, kit, equipment, coaches and scholarships, helping them to retain their position as 17th amongst the top sporting universities in the Country. We hope to continue our partnership, enabling students to develop and aspire to a top 15 BUCS place over the next couple of years.
May we also congratulate Imperial Medicals for moving six places up the BUCS table this year into 100th place, with a special mention to the Netball team who represented the medics greatly at Championships and won the Netball South Eastern Conference Cup.
