BRC Research Festival 2011
The 2011 Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) research festival took place on July 14 2011 at the Wolfson Education Centre, Hammersmith.
The event programme included a series of 20 speaker presentations, each providing an overview of the BRC-funded areas of study within their respective BRC research theme and a poster exhibition showcasing the ongoing research that is being conducted by >35 of the BRC-funded researchers. The aim of this initiative was to provide an overview of the translational research programmes that are supported by the Imperial BRC and the pioneering work that is fostered within the BRC’s clinical research facilities.
The meeting delegates included patients and healthcare professionals of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust as well as BRC-funded and Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC)-funded researchers from across the 5 campuses of Imperial College London. The day served as an opportunity to hear about the latest innovative research that is being conducted at the Imperial BRC and provided an open forum for discussion between researchers and fellow colleagues and members of the public.
Participants were invited to vote for their ving ceremony. The winning poster entitled ‘Mobile-Based Architecture of a Decision Support System for Optimal Insulin Dosing’ was submitted by Mr Peter Pesl of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and explored Mr Pesl’s research on the development and clinical validation of a smartphone-based decision support system (DSS) for the management of type 1 diabetes. The runner-up poster prize was awarded to Dr Shiv Chopra of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health for the poster; ‘The future’s bright, the future is... my health’ based on Dr Chopra’s work in the development of a clinical biobank that seeks to facilitate stratification of patients so that clinicians are better placed to deliver tailored interventions.
Owing to the success of this event, it is envisaged that the BRC Research Festival will be hosted annually and attendees are requested to submit their feedback.
