Second year students design a cordless hand-tool
As part of the second year Design and Manufacture course, students undertook the design of a cordless hand-tool. This year the task was the design of a cordless grinder and students performed the project individually.
This year's task presented a number of challenges for the students such as concept generation, using costing estimates to inform design decisions, detailed design and selection of components, as well as developing skills in solid-modelling. The brief was fuzzy with very few defined requirements which meant that students had to develop their own specifications as well as the detailed design. Solutions were diverse, with an overall very good standard, demonstrating significant effort, achievement and learning. A few images of the students’ designs are featured here courtesy of Victor Luzzato, Jake Woods, Olivia Tillbert, Farnaz Ostovari and Teddy Szemberg. The E.ON New Build & Technology Limited sponsored prize for the best design is awarded to Teddy Szemberg and for the best report to William Sharman.
