New Experimental Research Facilities
The Institute launches two new facilities...

The Institute of Shock Physics celebrated the opening of the new large bore gas gun and MACH pulsed power facilities. The event included tours of both facilities followed by a lunch hosted by Imperial's Deputy Rector, Professor Stephen Richardson.
The new single-stage large bore (100mm) gas gun has been designed to launch a 4kg sabot at 800m/s, with a maximum velocity of 1.4km/s. Assembly (above image - see the full installation process) and commisioning were completed in February.
The new MACH system is capable of delivering 2MA to a load in 250ns, resulting in magnetic pressures of 1-200kBar.
