Several members of academic staff of ESE have recently been recognised with awards. Nigel Brandon OBE is the Director of the Energy Futures Lab, which is the College’s hub for interdisciplinary energy research. He was awarded an OBE for services to UK/China relations in science. Speaking about receiving his OBE, he said: “My kids asked me the other day if they needed to address me differently now that I have this honour. I told them that they could address me as ‘dad OBE’! Jokes aside, I am absolutely delighted to receive this award. I know my family and my mum and dad are really proud. My name was put forward by the UK Foreign Office and it is astounding to think that people in the department went to all this trouble and did the reams of paperwork associated with this award to nominate me. I sincerely thank them and everyone else involved for their efforts.” The department's dedication to teaching and pastoral care excellence has also been recognised. Lorraine Craig has been named as a recipient of the Rector's Awards for Excellence in Supporting the Student Experience. An award that recognises the importance placed by the College on the contribution of support staff in underpinning the College’s learning environment for students. Gary Hampson has been awarded both a Rectors Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Faculty of Engineering Award for Teaching Excellence in Engineering. This continues the department's success with previous winners from ESE being Matthew Genge (2009) and John Cosgrove (2007).
Russell Garwood, a recently graduated PhD student, has been awarded the Faculty of Engineering's Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year award.
