ESE Awards in Teaching and Pastoral Care
ESE has received three top awards from Imperial College to recognise the high standard of it's teaching and pastoral care of students. Dr Matt Genge has been awarded the College Teaching Excellence Award and the Teaching Fellowship for Innovation. Dr Lorraine Craig has won the Rector's Award for Pastoral Care. These awards build on a long history of excellence in teaching recognised by College by past awards.
Up to six Teaching Excellence Awards are granted by Imperial College each year to recognise those amongst its academic staff who have made outstanding contributions to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The awards acknowledge innovative methods, inspirational delivery and high quality feedback. Each year up to four Teaching Fellows are elected amongst the winners of the Teaching Excellence Awards, of which one is the Teaching Fellow for Innovation to recognise those who develop new and novel educational courses or educational tools. The Department of Earth Science and Engineering has a long history of success in the College-wide award scheme with four current staff as awardees: past winners are Prof. Robert Zimmerman (1997), Dr Peter Allison (2002), and Prof. John Cosgrove (2007).
The Rector's Award for Pastoral Care recognises staff who have made outstanding contribution to the care of students welfare, in both their academic and personal lives. The award recognises that academic success requires support beyond the delivery of high quality education and that pastoral care is an essential activity in ensuring students meet their full academic potential. This includes effective careers support to help students make the most of the opportunities available to them.
The reputation of the Department's teaching, pastoral care, and degrees can also be measured by the success of our graduating students in obtaining employment and places on postgraduate courses. This academic year 90% of our graduating students had offers of employment or postgraduate courses by the time they received their final results.
