Teaching Awards for ESE

Seb TurnerDr Matthew Genge and Mr Sebastian Turner have won awards from the Faculty of Engineering for excellence in teaching. The Awards for Teaching Excellence in Engineering Education are given annually to recognise and reward individuals or small teams who are renowned for their exceptional teaching qualities and who make a significant contribution to the learning achievements in the Faculty. The Awards recognise that teaching makes as important a contribution to the impact of Imperial College as research since students educated within College make a significant contribution to national and international society. Three awards were given this year and competition from other departments was very strong.

Mr Seb Turner, a PhD student in ESE, received a new award for the outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant of the year which is designed to reward the contribution of PhD demonstrators to teaching and encourage excellence in their educational work. His citation states: "The level of responsibility Seb has been given is a clear reflection of his effectiveness as a GTA. Students have noted in particular his ability to help them develop their understanding of geological mapping and have stated that while feedback in the Department as a whole is good, the level of feedback from Seb is “awesome”.”".

Dr Matt Genge, a senior lecturer in the department, received one of the two Faculty Awards for Teaching Excellence in Engineering Education. His citation states: "Matt Genge epitomises the type of academic that many aspire to: excellence in research and teaching, and the ability to bring the lessons from research to the classroom for the inspiration and learning of his students".

This is the second time in the three years of the Awards for Teaching Excellence that ESE's contributions to teaching have been recognised. In the first year of the Awards Prof. John Cosgrove was a recipient.
