Dr Mary Robinson, Chancellor of Trinity College Dublin awards Lord Ara Darzi with honorary degree
Professor of surgery and Chair of Imperial’s Institute of Global Health Innovation, Lord Ara Darzi, was awarded a special honorary degree from Trinity College Dublin this month.
Professor of surgery and Chair of Imperial’s Institute of Global Health Innovation, Lord Ara Darzi, was awarded a special honorary degree from Trinity College Dublin at a ceremony to mark the school of medicine’s 300th anniversary.
Lord Darzi was presented with the award by the Chancellor of Trinity College Dublin, Dr. Mary Robinson, who was the first female President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Dr. Robinson is co-author of ‘Realizing the Right to Health’ which takes a human rights approach to healthcare systems by exploring the underlying social determinants of how healthcare is provided. She is also Chair of the ‘Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice’ which seeks to secure global justice for victims of climate change who are usually forgotten, such as the poor, the disempowered and the marginalised across the world.
On meeting Dr. Robinson, Lord Darzi said:
“Dr. Robinson’s interests in human rights, climate change and healthcare make her a natural ally of Imperial College’s Institute of Global Health Innovation. I’m pleased we managed to speak at length about new and existing pressures on healthcare and how health care provision may change in the future to address the needs of many, rather than the few. I look forward to welcoming Dr. Robinson to the Institute in the future and hope this leads to opportunities in the future for further collaboration."
Lord Darzi was conferred with a Doctor in Laws (LL.D) to recognise his role in health policymaking.
