IGHI is pleased to welcome Tom Hughes-Hallett in the new role of Executive Chair.

Tom joins the Institute as Adjunct Professor  and is the current Chief Executive of the charity Marie Curie Cancer Care. Tom has published two major reviews last year on Philanthropy and on End of Life Care for adults and children, and is also a trustee of The Kings Fund and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.

In the Institute’s revised structure, the Executive Chair will report to the Institute’s academic Director, Lord Ara Darzi.

The Executive Chair will be responsible for expanding the Institute’s current portfolio, including commercial and philanthropic opportunities and will work with academics to help progress research and education outputs.  He will also represent the Institute at international Forums, and the Parliamentary Group of Global Health.

Lord Ara Darzi, Director of the Institute commented on the appointment:

“We are delighted that Tom has agreed to fill this important strategic role of Executive Chair at the Institute of Global Health Innovation. Tom brings with him a wealth of experience - as Chief Executive of Marie Curie Cancer Care for over 10 years, under his leadership the Charity’s income has doubled and it has increased the care it gives to an additional 12,000 people and their families every year.

There have been a number of achievements since the Institute was created, in particular the establishment of the Centre for Health Policy and the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, both of which have embarked on an ambitious programme of work. The Executive Chair will develop the Institute’s portfolio even further. We look forward to working with Tom when he joins the College in September.”

Incoming Executive Chair, Tom Hughes-Hallett said:

“I am looking forward to working with Lord Darzi and Professor Guang-Zhong Yang and everyone at the Institute whose work I respect greatly. The Institute is addressing some of the most important questions around health care at the moment such as ageing populations and non–communicable diseases. Innovation has the power to transform healthcare delivery, and research at Imperial has enormous reach. I am thrilled to join to Institute and help shape the agenda of how we tackle such great challenges by developing the Institute's strategy, expanding its activities, and increasing its impact even further.”
