On Thursday 21st June, Sport Imperial held the annual Imperial ARCS (Appreciate, Recognise and Celebrate sport) event. The event brought together over 140 guests including students, staff, coaches, officials, volunteers, sponsors and partner organisations.
We were lucky enough to have Simon Dennis, Great Britain Rower and Olympic Gold Medallist present.
Simon entertained our guests with the interesting story of his history as a student and a member of the IC Boat Club at Imperial College London, his failures and successes and the path to his gold medal achievement. Many students were able to relate to his experiences and had some great questions to ask Simon. Simon kindly stayed for the entire evening and passed around his Gold medal for all to see.
Guests were treated to both food and drink and were also shown a clip of the new Sport imperial video. The video captures a day in the life of sport at Imperial College London.

Awards were presented in the following categories to the winners:
Coach of the Year - Sponsored by Serpentine Running Club: Jim Lewis (Karate)
Ambassador of the Year - Presented by Professor Denis Wright: Toby Spittle (IC Rugby)
Athlete of the Year - Presented by Simon Dennis: Wilf Kimberley (IC Boat)
Sports Media Award: James Carver (IC Snooker)
Ethos Award: Reception Team
Student Team of the Year: IC Ladies Fencing 1st
Student Club of the Year - sponsored by Gatorade: Tennis
We closed the evening by recognising our two students, Adam Scholefield and Melanie Wilson who have both been selected by Great Britain to represent our nation in this Summers London 2012 Olympics. Adam is the Vice Captain of the Water Polo team and Melanie forms part of the Rowing squad. We then awarded a prestige award to Simon Dennis for his contribution to both the College and the sporting sector.
We would like to congratulate all those that were nominated for awards and of course the winners.
Sport Imperial would also like to thank all of our sponsors and special guests who partnered with us to make this event such a success.
Lastly Sport Imperial would like to thank each and every student that participates in sport or physical activity at the College. Each and every one of you play your part in making sport such a growing success and we thank you all for doing so.
We look forward to making next year’s event even bigger and better and wish you all the best of luck for the next academic year and sporting seasons.
