Awards

PhD student Edward Spencer, working with Jamie Wilkinson and Andrew Berry on molybdenum transport in porphyry ore systems, has been awarded $4000 from the Hugh McKinstry Fund of the Society of Economic Geologists and £2000 from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining to support his research.

Gareth Morris was awarded an Arthur Holmes Centenary Grant to attend a conference in Japan. Further details of this internal award scheme can be found on the Arthur Holmes Centenary Grant website.

Research Grants

Adrian Muxworthy has received a Royal Society International Exchanges grant to work with Dr. James King at the University of Botswana.

Anna Joy Drury received an ECORD research grant of €1200 to look at the 'Onset and Termination of the Messinian Salinity Crisis: constraining variation of bottom water temperatures, ice volume and sea level' together with her PhD supervisor Cedric John.

Impact, Outreach, Media

Jamie Wilkinson gave an invited talk entitled "Geoscience Tertiary Education and Research in the UK" at the Franco-British workshop on strategic metals, organised by the French Embassy and the Technology Strategy Board, 11-12th June.

Dick Selley's publication (see above) attracted widespread media attention including BBC's 'Today' programme on 29th June.

Craig Magee gave an invited seminar at the University of Bristol on the 7th June entitled, “Visualising volcanic systems using seismic reflection data”.

Research Activity

Saman Ilankoon gave a presentation and Stephen Neethling chaired a session at the recent MEI Biohydrometallurgy 2012 conference in Falmouth, UK. See the MEI blog for some photo highlights of the conference.

Gareth Morris presented at the International Association of Colloid and Interface Scientists 2012 Cofnerence in Sendai, Japan. See the IACIS twitter feed for more information on the conference.

Pablo Brito-Parada presented a poster at the 22nd European Symposium on Computer Aided Process Engineering (ESCAPE 22) -- 17-20 June 2012,at University College London.

PhD Vivas

Fiona Larner successfully completed her PhD on Novel Applications of Stable Isotope Tracing Methods to Biomedical and Environmental Sciences, following viva examination on June 15th by Professors Mark Sephton and Frank Vanhaecke (University of Ghent, Belgium). Fiona has recently accepted a PDRA position at the University of Oxford, and will be starting mid July.
