Adi graduated from St Xavier's College, the University of Bombay in 1940. His subsequent cosmic ray research at St Xavier's lead to the award of MSc and then in 1946 to employment by the Tata Institute of Fundamental research.

At the Tata Institute he played a leading role in the Government of India Atomic Energy Commission's programme to develop cosmic ray research. In 1950-52 Adi was seconded by the Tata Institute to work with Professor P.M.S. Blackett, then at Manchester University. Adi proved very adept in the development of cloud chamber experiments with improved electronic and photographic techniques.

Adi left the Tata Institute in 1957 to take up a nuclear physics studentship and research post with Professor Blackett's group at Imperial College; after obtaining his doctorate from Imperial Adi joined the Science Museum.

Until recently Adi was a regular visitor to the Department of Physics academic and social functions.

Adi was a lifelong charitable supporter of education and health for the most disadvantaged; particularly for young people and the many around the world with easily treatable defective eyesight. He died in Mumbai in December 2006 and is sadly, but fondly, missed by his sister Gul.
