Match Highlights: BUCS Competition 2012-13 Week 6
Netball 3rds take on Brunel 6ths
This week's BUCS battle highlights include Basketball, Netball, Fencing, Squash and Badminton action on Conference Cup Day on Wednesday 14 November
The second cup day of the season on Wednesday 14 November at Ethos saw Basketball Men’s 1st in action against Surrey 1st as well as Netball 3rd v Brunel 6th, Fencing Men’s 2nd v Kings 1st, Squash Men’s 2nd v Kent 2nd, Squash Women’s 1st v LSE 1st and two Badminton games; Men’s 2nd v UCL and Men’s 1st v Warwick in the Trophy.
Men's 1st Basketball team taking on Surrey
Up first was Men’s Basketball who after a slow start to their league season were looking forward to a cup game and a win to help kick start their season. Imperial started strongly building a 24-10 lead in the first quarter. As the game progressed however, Imperial looked anxious in possession at times with some rushed plays and turnover ball but maintained their lead throughout winning the match 62-46 in the end. There were some great individual performances by Captain William Valla who scored 14 points and only conceded 1 foul and Wouter Thijssen who was the top point scorer of the day on 16 and was also named MVP.
Head of Sport Neil Mosley was courtside to watch the action and remarked, “The guys rushed some plays gifting possession to Surrey at different times in the match, however they fought hard, stayed in front throughout and secured a great cup result. Bring on the next round!”
Over on the 5th court, Men’s Fencing 2nd team were facing local rivals Kings 1st, who after a late start fought hard and with each match up being tight affairs the biggest winning margin was only a few hits. The final match score ended 128-132 to Kings. A proud Captain, Jamie Fairclough stated he was frustrated they haven’t managed a win yet this season but the performances have been positive and he “can smell a win coming!”
Next up was Netball 3rd v Brunel 6th in the Conference Cup and like the Basketball team had a great start winning the first quarter 5-3. This however kicked Brunel into gear who reacted well, coming back strongly building a lead on 16-11 going into the final quarter. IC dug in and fought hard in the early stages of the last period and brought the score back level with 2 minutes to go; but some nervous passing by IC gave Brunel an advantage and they took it, closing the game out 18-20.
The day ended with Squash Men’s 2nd and Women’s 1st both winning their games without losing a rubber and Men’s Badminton 1st putting on a great performance in the BUCS Trophy v Warwick 2nd to progress to the last 16.
