The Ultimate Field Trip

The Ultimate Field Trip is an international competition BP runs each year. It’s aimed at science and engineering undergraduates and Masters students. It challenges the student to solve a real-world problem — one that could help meet the world’s growing demand for energy safely and responsibly.

This year, three 2nd year UG students from Civil & Environmental Engineering Department (Stephen Rose, Dominik Sznajder, Edward Courtnell) reached the grand finals, along with 3 other teams, from the 409 which started out at the beginning of the academic year. The finals were held at the Royal Institution of Great Britain on 8th March. The Imperial Team’s project was about on-board regenerative braking for trains, using a lithium ion capacitor system. Despite a very good performance on the day, the Imperial Civils team could not quite clinch the victory, which went to a team from Strathclyde, with a project about compressed natural gas/electric engines for cars. The imperial Team were in good company as runners up, along with a team from Oxford and a mixed team from Strathclyde-Glasgow.
